About Karen
Karen Skoglund—known to many as Purple Karen—is a visionary fiber artist, master sewer, and celebrated dye artist whose work spans more than four decades at the highest levels of Fiber Arts, Fashion, Theater, and Design.
Her artistry transforms fabric into legacy—whether developing exclusive patterns for renowned fashion designers, handcrafting intricate costumes for stage and performance, or teaching students to unlock their own creative potential. From delicate silks to bold hand-dyed textiles, every piece Karen creates is a testament to her meticulous craftsmanship and boundless imagination.
Teaching with Heart
More than a master of her craft, Karen is a gifted teacher known for her clever, memorable methods “You are a Princess or a Queen!” “Measure, Measure, Measure!” and “Don’t forget to Dance” are just a few of her classics. She delights in teaching students of all ages, from beginners threading their first needle to seasoned makers perfecting their technique.
A lifelong learner herself, Karen studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where her curiosity for design and technique bloomed. She’s always exploring new materials, methods, exhibits, and ideas, and she shares what she discovers with the spark and generosity of a true creative spirit. A Life in Stitch & Story
A mother of two (now grown), Karen raised her sons in a home filled with creativity, curiosity, and love — a space where art, color, and imagination were stitched into everyday life. Today, she shares her lively studio with her beloved companions, Shuggie the dog and Panda the cat, and our newest addition Thumper the kitten.
Sewing has been Karen’s lifelong passion, guiding her through challenges and fueling her boundless curiosity. She has taught herself countless techniques, built an extraordinary resource library, and cultivated a practice rooted in exploration, patience, and resilience. Her love of learning never stops; she travels, studies, experiments, and absorbs inspiration from museums, artist studios, and the hidden corners of the art world.
